Historical Note
The Virginia Iron, Coal and Coke Company was organized in 1899, when it acquired several plants previously owned by the Carter Coal and Coke Company in Pulaski and Wythe counties, Virginia, as well as furnaces at Roanoke, Radford, and Max Meadows, in addition to operations in other parts of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The company was forced into receivership in 1901 but emerged in 1903 and continued to operate, expanding its operations to include two rail lines and numerous coal mines.
