Administrative History

The Norfolk Southern Railroad was founded under the reorganization of the Norfolk and Southern Railway in 1910. The line served southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina. The company went into receivership in 1932 and was reorganized in 1942 as Norfolk Southern Railway. It was purchased by the Southern Railway in 1974. The Southern Railway combined with the Norfolk & Western Railway to form Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1982.
