Administrative History

Established in 1932, the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, Inc. (RATC) maintains and protects the Appalachian Trail (AT) in southern Virginia from near Bland to Black Horse Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The organization develops and maintians trails, campsites, open shelters, and permanent camps on the AT; collects data about the history, scenery, geoology, flora, and fauna of the Appalachian Mountains, prepares maps and guides for hiking, camping, and forest fire prevention; supports the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, National Park Service, and U.S. Forest Service; and participates in the development of laws and regulations related to the AT and the Appalachian Mountains.
