Historical Note

Mathematics courses have been offered since 1872. The different names and organizations of the department have included: Mathematics (1872-91); Mathematics and Civil Engineering (1891-94); Mathematics (1894-97); Mathematics and Physics (1897-1904); and Mathematics (1904-present). The Dept. of Mathematics is now part of the College of Science.
