Biographical Note

Wilson E. Schmidt (1927-1981), a specialist in economic development, joined the Virginia Tech faculty as head of the Economics Department in 1966. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland (B.S., 1947), the University of Pittsburgh (M.A., 1948), and the University of Virginia (Ph.D., 1952). Before working for Virginia Tech, he taught at George Washington University, and served as the chairman of the Department of Economics from 1965-1966.

Schmidt took leave to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research in the U.S. Treasury Department from 1970 to 1972. He planned to return to government work as the U.S. Director of the World Bank, when he died suddenly in July 1981.
