Biographical Note

Francis Preston was born on August 2, 1765 in Botetourt, Virginia. He was a trained lawyer who was elected for the Virginia State Senate in 1783. In 1793 he was elected to Congress, serving until 1797. After resuming his law practice for the years following, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from 1812-1814 and served as a Colonel of the Virginia Volunteers in the War of 1812, later being promoted to a Brigadier General of the U.S. Army. Preston continued to serve in the Virginia State Senate from 1816-1820. He died on May 26, 1836 in Columbia, South Carolina.
