Biographical Note

Eugene B. Hovey was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1838. During the Civil War, he served with Company I of the 37th Massachusetts Infantry as a sergeant. In 1862, he married Sarah Squires (b. 1843). They had at least two children before she died in 1872. In 1874, he married Bessie Scranton (1852-1918), and they had at least one child. Hovey worked as a machinist in Massachusetts for many years. He died in 1916.
