Guthrie, Elizabeth D.

 Person

Biographical Note

Elizabeth D. Guthrie (1910-2005) served as the director of the VPI Glee Club from at least 1940 to 1943 (her records and account end suddenly in 1943, the time in which the VPI cadets left to serve in WWII). According to Guthrie's account, after the previous VPI glee club had disbanded, two cadets approached Guthrie in the fall of 1940 to inquire whether she might be interested in directing a new Glee Club. The club met in War Memorial Hall, and Guthrie volunteered as director for the first year, since the club had no funds.
