Shepherd, Virginius E., 1827-1896
Biographical Note
Virginius E. Shepherd was born in 1827 in Nansemond County, Virginia, and earned a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1847. He served as a Chief Clerk in the Confederate War Department during the American Civil War.
Shepherd was the first librarian and first treasurer at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (V.A.M.C.), serving from 1872-1875. He also served as the secretary of the faculty from 1872-1881. Shepherd was a professor of languages from 1875-1885 and book-keeping 1882-1885.
Shepherd married Frances E. Watson on September 1, 1848, in Ablbemarle, had they a daughter Fannie E. and son William. He died on March 25, 1896 in Richmond.
