Biographical Note

Henry Dodge Ayre, the son of George S. and Mary Ann Ayre, was born in Upperville (Fauquier County), Virginia in 1856. He graduated from Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) with a degree in agriculture and mechanics in 1876. Ayre married Julia Peck in Salem, Virginia in 1879. The 1880 census describes Henry D. Ayre as a 24-year-old farmer, living in Loudoun County, Virginia with 24-year-old wife Julia. In 1894, Ayre was granted U.S. patent number 512,573 on a device for marking corn rows. By 1910, he was living in Cleveland, Tennessee and engaged in farming and the lumber business. Henry Ayre died on October 3, 1939.

This collection contains college memorabilia of father and son Henry D. and Clayton E. Ayre, both of whom attended Virginia Agricultural & Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) during the late 19th century. It includes cadet caps, lecture notes, a certificate, and photograph.
