Biographical Note

Jacob S. Winans was born March 15, 1838 in Lake Milton Township, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Esther Fulton on February 17, 1864. He mustered into the 38th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 9th Reserves, Company H (also called the New Brighton Rifles) as a 1st Sergeant, May 24, 1861. In November 1861 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and then to Captain in December 1862. He mustered out with his company on May 12, 1864 and was later granted a promotion to Brevet Major in March 1865. He died on May 2, 1914 in Council Grove, Kansas.

Abstract

The collection includes two letters and their original envelope from Jacob S. Winans to his father Dr. Isaac Winans. Both letters were sent in the same envelope. They were written after Winans's return to Camp Tennally (Tennallytown, Maryland) after serving picket at Great Falls, Virginia from September 9-16, 1861.
