Biographical Note
James Gallagher was a soldier for the Union during the American Civil War. During the war, Gallagher was stationed at Hilton Head Island and Morris Island.
There is a James Gallagher who was born in August 1839 in Ireland and died January 25, 1907, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He served as a private in the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry and the 12th Rhode Island Infantry.

Abstract
James Gallagher was a soldier for the Union during the American Civil War. This collection contains photocopies of letters written by James Gallagher to his Father, Sister, Mother, and Aunt, primily written from Hilton Head Island and Morris Island in South Carolina. The letters are meant to update his family on his health and what he had been doing for the Union Army.
