The James Anthony Letter is written by James Anthony in Buchanan, Virginia, on August 2, 1850, to Colonel James H. Pipen in Wytheville, Virginia. Anthony describes a job offer from the James River Company and his resignation from his job working for Colonel Pipen, shows admiration for his employer, and offers a replacement for his position. The letter is postmarked from Pattonsburg, which was located across the James River from Buchanan.
