Correspondence to Gertrude Biddle from James C. Biddle, August - October 1863
Scope and Content
The James C. and Gertrude (Meredith) Biddle Family Correspondence, 1861-1865, includes letters primarily written between James C. Biddle, Jr., and his fiancee/wife Gertrude Meredith Biddle, as well as letters from Gertrude's family C. K. Meredith and William M. Meredith, during the American Civil War. One letter from C. K. Meredith also encloses a letter from Sarah Biddle to James and Gertrude Biddle. In addition to expressions of love, the contents pertain mostly to James C. Biddle's time serving as a Union officer, primarily during his service with Generals Thomas Williams, James B. Ricketts, and George G. Meade and detailing his day to day life and events of the war. Letters from Gertrude Biddle also discusses family illness and travel, battles and progress in the war, and government issues concerning the war.
