Letter, 1812
Scope and Content
This collection consists of a letter from John Preston to W. Ready, written from Staunton, Virginia, September 3, 1812. Preston was offering Ready the job of serving as "overseer" at the Horseshoe Bottom plantation and property. Preston describes the financial and other compensation (sheep, food goods for his family, and a horse) offered for the position. Preston notes "You know the duties of an Overseer & all & every one of them must be performed with fidelity on your part." He also offers Ready the opportunity to visit Horsehoe Bottom prior to making a decision and indicates that one of his sons will deliver this offer and wait for a reply, if required.
