Smith of the 2nd Missouri Infantry, Confederate Army, about the lack of mail from Smith and the capture of Poindexter's brother. Poindexter begs his cousin to write him more frequently and asks for updated about health of Smith's uncle Jim. The letter closes by stating that since Poindexter has enlisted in the Confederate Army, any future replies should be directed to him at Camp Lee in Richmond, Virginia.
