Abstract

This collection contains loose ledger sheets for the household expenditures of Dr. John B. Slusser, an advertisement from the Pressed Steel Car Company, a reciept from the Virginia Tech dining hall, a United States patent application for a nut-lock invented by Murray C. and William J. Slusser, and pages from a personal account book.

Abstract "Store Book, no. 5, 1912" includes account listings for the J.H. Slusser & Son Coal Company store from 1902 through 1909. John H. Slusser was born in Blacksburg, Virginia on August 28, 1840. Slusser purchased a coal mine on Coal Bank Hollow Road in Blacksburg. The coal company was taken over by John Slusser's son, Murry, after his death in 1909. The M.C. Slusser Coal Company ran the mine until 1950 and served the surrounding areas, include coal supplies for the nearby Virginia...

Jacob W. Smiley Diary,

Abstract

This collection includes a diary kept by Jacob Wallace Smiley that spans from the time of he was drafted in August 1863, until he was killed in action on May 4, 1864. Smiley chronicled the travels and activities of his unit, the 7th Company, 1st Battalion, New York Sharpshooters, in the Northern Virginia region. The diary also includes a CDV of Smiley and his wife, Melissa.

Abel Smith Jr. Letter

Official communication from Abel Smith Jr. (1839-1863), lieutenant colonel commanding the 165th New York Infantry during the American Civil War, written on March 20, 1863, to Captain Felix Agnus, demanding an explanation for allowing a first lieutenant to hold a subordinate position to a second lieutenant during the morning battalion drill.
