Biographical Note

Sephas (Cephas) L. Walton was a farmer in Floyd County. He was born about 1840-1841 to James W. Walton and Louisa W. Walton. At age 20 he was six feet with dark hair, blue eyes, and a shallow complextion. The spelling of his name seems to have changed from C to S between his two enlistments.

Sephas (Cephas) L. Walton volunteered May 28, 1861 at the Floyd County Court House at age 19 to serve one year in the Rebel Army (42 Virginia Regiment, Company B). Walton left home on June 11,1861 and was dischared January 22,1862 at Romney, West Virginia for Tuberculosis, arriving home February 15,1862. Walton rejoined the Rebel Army June 6, 1864 and was assigned to Company A 1st Virginia Battalion. Sephas was wounded accidently in the left foot July 5,1864 and was sent to Richmond Hospital. Walton returned home August 21,1864. Once again Walton returns to camp February 6,1865. He was then captured at Amelia Court House April 5,1865 and taken to Point Lookout, Maryland April 13,1865. Walton was released June 22, 1865 and returned home June 29,1865.

Abstract

This folder contains eighteen letters and one envelope to and from Sephus (Cephas) L. Walton. These letters are to and from his Mother, Father, Brother, Wife and other relations while he was in the 1st Virginia Battalion, Company A and 42nd Infantry Virginia Regiment, Company B.
