Historical Note

The Blacksburg Community Concert Association was founded in 1936 as means of bringing nationally recognized classical music and dance performers to the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Initially known as the Blacksburg National Concert Association, the organization was part of a larger, national organization sponsoring performers who traveled a nationwide circuit. The first president of the Blacksburg association was VPI president Julian A. Burruss. The association later operated under the name of the Blacksburg Cooperative Concert Association and finally as the Blacksburg Community Concert Association. The association undertook annual membership subscription drives in Blacksburg and surrounding communities, sponsoring three to five shows per season. In its 33-year history, the association sponsored more than 160 programs. The Blacksburg Community Concert Association ceased operations in 1969, when VPI and Radford College withdrew financial assistance.
