Biographical Note
Joseph Hampton Barnett was born in the Montgomery/ Rockbridge County area of Virginia. He was a farmer prior to enlisting in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. At the age of twenty, he joined the G company of the 4th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. He was discharged only five months later due to chronic rheumatism. He attended several CSA reunions from 1899-1916. He received the Southern Cross of Honor for his service. He died December 13, 1922.
Historical Note
The Southern Cross of Honor was a medal given by the Daughters of the Confederacy . It was first given in Atlanta, July 1898, to the husband of one of the designers for his service to the Confederacy.

Abstract
The Joseph Hampton Barnett Medals contains the Southern Cross of Honor, reunion medals from Florida and Richmond, Virginia, and ribbons from the Grand Camps Confederate Veterans of Virginia reunions.
Arrangement
The medals are divided into two envelopes with the first containing the Southern Cross of Honor, two medals from reunions and a button from a reunion. The second envelope contains the rest of the badges in the collection in chronological order.
Source of Acquisition
Joseph Hampton Barnett Medals was donated by Special Collections in 1979.
