Scope and Content

This letter consists of a single letter written to S. C. Robinson, of Botetourt County, Virginia, by an unidentified slaveholder living in Mount Airy [Pittsylvania County, Virginia]. The writer asks Robinson to inform him of the arrival and wellbeing of the two enslaved men that he had hired out to Robinson. He also offers to hire out to Robinson a young boy for the period of March to December and asks what Robinson will pay.

Biographical Note

The letter in this collection identifies S. C. Robinson as a resident of Botetourt County, Virginia. Census records list a Samuel C. Robinson living in Botetourt County in 1850. He is described as a 30-year-old ironmaster, living with Nannie Robinson, 25, and Samuel, three months. A Samuel C. Robinson of Richmond is listed as an owner of Botetourt County's Roaring Run iron furnace, rebuilt in 1847, and in disrepair by 1859.

This item had long been identified as the "W. Robinson Letter," but a closer inspection in 2021 revealed it to have been written to S. C. Robinson.
