Hiram Matthew Papers
Scope and Content
This collection consists of twenty-two letters of outgoing correspondence from Union soldier Hiram Matthew to his wife Elmira Matthew of Campbellsburg Washington County, Indiana, during the American Civil War. The correspondence includes descriptions of a soldier's life including, but not limited to, health aliments suffered during the war; punishments suffered for crimes committed during war; and battle accounts, including accounts of the Siege of Atlanta. Eleven letters between the dates of February 1, 1863, and June 27, 1863, were written from Corinth, Mississippi. Eight letters were written between November 24, 1864 and March 15, 1864, from Pulaski, Tennessee. The last letter is dated April 28, 1865, from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Biographical Note
Hiram Matthew was a Union soldier from Campbellsburg in Washington County, Indiana. He was a member of the Company A, 66th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
There is a Hiram Matthew (1830-1898) and his wife Almira (1838-1898) buried in Saltillo Cemetery in Saltillo, Washington County, Indiana.
