Cyril H. Tyler Letter
Scope and Content
This collection contains a single letter from Cyril H. Tyler, a sergeant in Company I, 7th Michigan Infantry during the American Civil War. Writing to his father from Fair Oaks, Virginia on Jun 9, 1862, following the Battle of Seven Pines, Tyler discusses mentions being fired upon by Confederate sharpshooters while eating breakfast, a recent skirmish between pickets, Casey's loss of 19 pieces of artillery to the Confederates, crossing the Chickahominy River, and the overwhelming smell of the dead after battle. The letter is accompanied by a stamped enveloped, addressed to Rufus Tyler in Kalamazoo, Michigan

Biographical Note
Cyril H. Tyler, son of Rufus and Emma Farnum Tyler, was born in Yates County, New York on February 11, 1841. By 1860, according to the federal census, the Tylers were living and farming in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with Cyril listed as the oldest of three Tyler children in the household. On August 14, 1861, Tyler enlisted as a private in Company I, 7th Michigan Infantry. He was promoted to corporal on March 1, 1862 and to sergeant on September 24, 1863 before being discharged on August 22, 1864. Following the war, Tyler returned to Michigan, and the 1870 federal census lists him as a 29-year-old farmer living in Kalamazoo with wife Mary, 30, and two young daughters. The 1900 census shows the Tylers living in Cedar Creek (Wexford County), Michigan. Cyril H. Tyler died in Manton (Wexford County), Michigan on November 18, 1913, and was buried in Manton's Fairview Cemetery.
