This collection contains the records of C. B. Anderson [Charles Blanton Anderson, Sr.?], a general store owner in Newbern (Pulaski County), Virginia, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection includes a business journal, containing information about accounts, together with copies of Anderson's correspondence. Also included are three account books, containing details on the store's credits and debits. (Within the ledger for 1884-1890 are miscellaneous sketches and writings.) Completing the collection are two notes which were found in the ledger for 1897-1901. The records have value to those interested in local history and genealogy in Pulaski County at the turn of the 20th century.

Biographical Note

C. B. Anderson was a general store owner in Newbern (Pulaski County), Virginia. His records provide little further information regarding his personal life.

An obituary supplies the following information regarding Charles Blanton Anderson, Sr., a resident of Newbern, to whom these items most likely belonged: The son of Joseph Larkin Anderson (a blacksmith) and Susan Rebecca Keffer Anderson, Charles Blanton Anderson Sr. was born in Pulaski County on January 14, 1857. Anderson married Stella Austin, and the couple had four children: Walter Anderson, C. B. Anderson Jr., Mrs. Frank M. Akers, and Stella Anderson. His obituary reports that Anderson was a graduate of Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College's class of 1886, but no other record of his attendance could be found. Anderson died following a short illness from pneumonia on May 16, 1945.
