James Carr / Thomas Clark Letters

 Collection
Identifier: Ms-1990-035

Scope and Content

This collection contains two letters written by James Carr and Thomas Clark, both privates in Company G, 56th New York Infantry during the American Civil War. The letters are addressed to Robert/Bob. Carr's letter, written from Chickahonany [sic] provides a description of his company's part in the recent Battle of Fair Oaks. Carr also recounts rescuing a wounded company comrade, John Dagnon, from the battlefield. The letter is unsigned and appears to be incomplete.

Thomas Clark's short letter, written June [i.e. July] 5, 1862, very briefly mentions artillery shelling of the enemy on the previous Monday; Independence Day; and others in his company (James "Car," Harvey, and Jo Smith); then concludes, "[E]very thing is lovely and the goose hangs high."

Biographical Note

James Alanson Carr, son of Robert P. and Celine Sly Carr, was born in 1832. The New York state census for 1855 shows Carr, 23, living with his widowed mother in Warwick (Orange County) and working as a farmer. By 1860, Carr had married, and the federal census for that year adds 21-year-old Mary A. Carr to the household. Carr enlisted as a private for three years' service in the 56th New York Infantry at Middletown, New York on March 1st, 1861, and was mustered into service with Company G on April 1. He participated in the Battle of Fair Oaks, White Oak Swamp, Charles City Crossroads, and Malvern Hill. Carr was discharged for disability at Fort Monroe, Virginia on January 20, 1863. Following his discharge, Carr returned to Warwick. The 1865 New York state census lists him as a merchant. The 1870 federal census describes him as a 36-year-old farmer, while his wife Mary, 28, kept a boarding house. James A. Carr died on April 10, 1876, and was buried in Florida Cemetery, New York.

Thomas Clark was born in Ireland, ca. 1841. He enlisted as a private for three years' service in the 56th New York Infantry at Wallkill, New York on March 14, 1862, and was mustered into service with Company G the same day. Muster rolls show him present with the company through December 31, 1863. He re-enlisted as a veteran on March 23, 1864, but muster rolls list him as absent without leave between April 15 and April 30. He apparently rejoined the regiment soon afterward, then was on detached service with the Quartermaster Department at Beaufort, South Carolina in fall, 1864. He mustered out with Company G at Charleston, South Carolina on October 17, 1865.
