Scope and Content

The Shelton Hardaway Short, III, Papers consist of photocopies of news clippings and writings by and about Short's activities, in addition to photocopies of diplomas, certificates, and awards. Topics include Short's donation of his father's papers to the Marshall Foundation in Lexington, Virginia; canoeing on the Meherrin River; his research on Patrick Henry; and the dedication of the Forestry Center in Mechlenburg County named in honor of his parents.

Biographical Note

Shelton Hardaway Short, III (1926-2005) was a resident of Clarksville, Virginia. He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College (1948, B.A. in History) and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1969, Ph.D. in History). He was a Patrick Henry Research Scholar at Hampden-Sydney (1972-1973) and a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Short was a Certified Virginia Tree Farmer in Mechlenburg and Lunenburg counties and served as a director of the Virginia Forests Educational and Research Board.

The collection was donated to Special Collections and University Archives in several accruals in 1991 and 1994.
