Scope and Contents

This collection consists of tapes of lectures and talks given at Civil War Roundtables and sessions at a Civil War Summer Institute led by Virginia Tech History Professor James I. Robertson, Jr., and attended and recorded by Edward H. Hahn. Topics focus on prominent American Civil War battles, campaigns, and persons. The tapes include recordings of Robertson's "Campaigning with Lee" series, as well as talks and lectures given by other prominent Civil War historians such as Ed Bearss, Robert Krick, John Schildt, and others.

No biographical information could be found for Edward H. Hahn.

James I. "Bud" Robertson, Jr., the Virginia Tech history professor who organized and gave many of the lectures and talks in the collection, was born in 1930. A prominent American Civil War historian, he taught at the University of Iowa, George Washington University, and the University of Montana before teaching at Virginia Tech until his retirement in 2011. In addition to his "Campaigning with Lee" series that ran for almost 40 years, Robertson authored over 40 books, gave more than 1,000 talks on the Civil War, and delivered over 350 radio essays.

The Edward H. Hahn Cassette Tapes were donated to Special Collections and University Archives in 1992.
