Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a letter written by Edward Travis Clark, a student at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech). Dated June 4, 1875, the letter is addressed to "Willie" (Wm. B. Sims, of Alexandria, Virginia). Clark discusses his recent illness, the lapse in his studies, and his plan to recuperate in the mountains over the summer. He also mentions the recent death of a mutual acquaintance, Jake Adkisson. The letter is written on stationery bearing the letterhead "Clark & Farant, Room No. 6 over the Meachanical Department, Va. A. & M. College," and is accompanied by a stamped envelope with a printed return address: "E. T. Clark, V. A. & M. College, Blacksburg, Va."

Biographical / Historical

Edward Travis Clark was a student at Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College during the 1874/1875 and 1875/1876 sessions. He matriculated from Halifax County, Virginia, and is likely the 12-year-old Edward T. Clark who appears in the 1870 federal census as a resident in Halifax County, Virginia, home of John T. and Mary A. Clark. By 1880, according to the census, Travis Clark was living with his father, Rev. Jonathan T. Clark, in Leaksville (Rockingham County), North Carolina, and working as a farmer. In 1885, Clark was living in Asheville, North Carolina. That year, he married Mary Ella Burgin (1860-1962) of McDowell County, North Carolina. An Edward Travis Clark (born October 27, 1857) died in Asheville on May 6, 1898, and was buried in the city's Riverside Cemetery. At the time of his death, he had been working as an engineer for the Southern Railway for 15 years.
