Scope and Contents

This collection contains 33 black & white photographs taken by Dale Belcher, of Floyd County, Virginia. The photographs depict Appalachian people, buildings, and traditional culture in Floyd, Lee, Montgomery, Patrick, and Scott counties, Virginia; Kentucky; North Carolina; and West Virginia. On the reverse side of each photo is a descriptive note by Belcher. Included are the following photographs: cabin (Carroll County), cornfield (Floyd County)(2), school near Terry's Fork (Floyd County), old wagon and wooden corn planter at Mabry Mill (Floyd County), John N. Hylton (Floyd County), John Newton Hylton grinding cornmeal (Floyd County), John Newton Hylton's mill (interior, [Floyd County]), preparing for hog-scalding (Floyd County), grist mill (Floyd County), "jolt" wagon (Floyd County), 1921 McCormick Deering tractor (Floyd County), Falling Waters Methodist Church (near Ironto), Willie Hooker (Meadows of Dan), Bob White Covered Bridge (Woolwine), Hubert Hensley and wife with milk cow (Lee County), Hubert Hensley and horse preparing to plow (Lee County), Stone Face Mountain (Lee County), log building in Elliot [i.e., Ellett] Valley (Montgomery County), Joe Carter of Hilton (Scott County), home of Sophia Stuart (Greenup County, Kentucky), home of Jesse Stuart (W-Hollow, Kentucky), Willie Gibbons cabin and farm (Kentucky), Brush Mountain School (Kentucky), Appalachian landscape (Kentucky)(2), Loretta Lynn family home (Kentucky), Grandfather Mountain (North Carolina), Appalachian landscape (West Virginia), mining camp near North Fork (West Virginia), Indian Creek Covered Bridge (West Virginia), New River Gorge Bridge (West Virginia), Turner Chapel near Keystone (West Virginia), and old house on Pound Mountain.
