Scope and Content

This collection contains four group project reports for experiments completed between August and September 1954. The projects were completed for Chemical Engineering 401, a class at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). R. H. Crewdson acted as the foreman of the group, which also included R. S. Luttrell and N. N. Bakhshi.

Biographical Note - N. N. Bakhshi

Narendra Nath Bakhshi was born about 1928. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1956. He worked for Hydrocarbon Research, Inc., and Air Products, Inc., before joining the University of Saskatchewan in 1963.

Biographical Note - R. H. Crewdson

Rev. Dr. Robert Henry (also called Dr. Bob) Crewdson was born to Henry and Katherine Irene (McFate) Crewdson on January 29, 1933, in Pennsylvania, and he grew up in Front Royal, Virginia. He received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1955. After his graduation, he worked briefly for DuPont before joining the U. S. Navy. Crewdson married Lois Ellen Perkins (1934-2018) on August 5, 1956, while he was still in the Navy. Following his service, Crewdson received a Masters of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, an Episcopal seminary in Alexandria. Crewdson later received his Doctor of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. Crewdson spent the rest of his career working in the Episcopal Church. He died on July 27, 2022.

Biographical Note - R. S. Luttrell

Robert Stephens Luttrell was born to Robert Wayne and Maude Dee (Stephens) Luttrell in Bristol, Virginia, on June 25, 1933. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering, both from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1955 in 1956, respectively. Luttrell served in the U.S. Army and worked at Aramco in Saudi Arabia, retiring as Vice President after 30 years. He married Oral Merlow Donavant on December 21, 1957, and they had four children.
