Scope and Content

The Charles P. Greer Letter contains a typed missive to C. J. French of Roanoke as well as a broadside advertising the auction of property in Troutdale, Virginia. In this letter of 1947, Charles P. Greer proposes the purchase of 9.5 acres of land being auctioned off in Troutdale. Greer plans to turn the land into a private fishing pond, utilize the water for power, and build a twenty-foot high stone and cement dam. The provided broadside discusses the time, location, and items to be auctioned in Troutdale.

Biographical Note

Charles P. Greer was born on March 8, 1877, to Shadrack Marshall Greer and Lausyntha M. Parks. He married Sue Emma Weatherly (1880-1938), and the couple had six children: Mary Katherine, Charles D., Edith, Mildred, Carroll, and Emma. Greer held several occupations and variously appears as a lumberman, an owner of sheep, a merchant, and a land speculator. A resident of Troutdale, Virginia, Greer took great pride in the community and wrote a brief history of the hamlet shortly before his death on November 10, 1953.
