Biographical Note

Younger Hardwick (1792-1850) married Susannah Kinzer in Montgomery County, Virginia, in 1828. Younger and Susannah had five children: Alonzo Cecil (1830-1899), Thomas Germaine (1832-1914), Catherine Elouise (1835-1867), Elizabeth Arminta (1837-1900), and James Kinzer (1838-1903). Alonzo married Susan Wilson in 1860, and settled in an area of northeast Blacksburg, Virginia. They had seven children: Walton Jahue (1861-1898), William Marion H. (1864-died in infancy), James Thomas Sr. (1867-1921), Elliot Vinyard (?-1874, died in infancy), Herbert S. (1875-1917), Bessie Sullivan (1879-1917), and Samuel Elkanah (1882-1975).

Thomas Germaine married Mary Elizabeth (Mollie) Smith in 1867, and settled in Newport, Giles County, Virginia. The couple had nine children: Ada Susannah Rebecca (1868-1876), Alonzo James (1870-1926), Charles Abram (1872-1956), Virginia Elizabeth (1874-1890), Thomas Viceroy (1875-1943), Henrietta Catharine (1877-1886), Lula Lee (1880-1953), Frank Staples (1882-1944), Mary Florence (1884-1965).

Abstract

This collection contains a spiral-bound copy of Hardwick family letters transcribed by Charles Graham Burress, Jr. The letters are supplemented with historical notes regarding various members of the Hardwick family.
