Scope and Content

The collection contains the 1863 diary of Henry Squire, 72nd New York Infantry and includes entries from January through July. Early entries detail camp life, war news, and in particular, playing baseball and boxing, an inspection by Lincoln, and camp rumors (from March "Gen. Lee [was] dead and [Stonewall] Jackson had been wounded"). Entries during the first part of May talk about Squire's experiences while at Libby Prison in Richmond. He was captured at Chancellorsville May 3rd and paroled May 13.

Biographical Note

Henry Squire enlisted for service in the Civil War in May 1861. He joined the Company D of the 72nd New York Infantry as a private.
