The United Confederate Veterans, or UCV, organized former Confederate soldiers after the Civil War. The organization was established in 1889 and held its last meeting in Norfolk, Va in 1951. Members were organized into a military style hierarchy lead by a national headquarters and three departments. Altogether, the UCV provided its members with the opportunity to remember and respect their experiences in service. One could compare the UCV to the Union's veteran group, the Grand Army of the Republic.

Founded in 1896, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, SCV, is the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers. The SCV works as a historical, non-political body and seeks to preserve the South's Civil War history.
