Administrative History

Created in 1907 from the merger of two existing railroads, the Virginian Railway Company (VGN) operated as an entity until 1959, at which point it became part of the Norfolk & Western Railway. A brief history of the VGN can be found on the Norfolk and Western Historical Society website.

The Norfolk and Western Railway began as a coal hauling train known for its large capacity and economical performance. In the late 1950s, the company merged with the Virginian Railway and by 1964, after several other merger, the Norfolk and Western had become a renowned midwestern carrier. Routes ran from Norfolk, VA and Buffaloy, NY to Chicago, IL and St. Louis and Kansas City, MO. The Norfolk and Western Railway ended in 1998 when it merged with the Norfolk Southern Corporation. For more information see the Norfolk and Western Historical Society's website.
