Scope and Content

The collection consists of seven letters written by Edward F. Tubbs, Company I, 14th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry (159th Volunteers) to his mother and siblings at home in Albion, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

The first letter, dated July 15, 1858, written from Conneaut, Ohio includes plans to visit home and news from his neighborhood. On the 24th of February, 1863, Tubbs wrote his mother from Harper's Ferry, Virginia describing a gift he intends to send her, new clothes and items he recently purchased, and expresses his desire to remain in contact. Tubbs wrote the third letter on April 3, 1863 from Harper's Ferry, Virginia giving his mother permission to collect his county bounty, reporting on his health and hospital stay, as well as discussing camp life. Tubbs's forth letter, dated May 27, 1863, consists of war news and reports on camp life, news from home, and his disdain for the war. On September 28, 1863, Tubbs wrote his fifth letter from Beverly, West Virginia discussing war news, news from home, drafted soldiers, and his desire to be close to home. Tubbs wrote about his participation in Union raids on the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad and his health in the sixth letter from Webster, West Virginia, dated December 29, 1863. At camp near Winchester, Virginia, dated December 2, 1864, Tubbs wrote the seventh letter consisting of war news, struggles in camp life, difficulties of the war, and his desire for an end to the war.
