Historical Note
The Virginia Tech Airport, initially planned in 1929, and construction of a runway strip quickly followed. The land was provided by VPI, but the state funded 50% of the costs. The airport opened operations in 1931, and over the next 50 years, it grew and expanded its capabilities. The airport at Virginia Tech underwent substantial updates and modernization in the early 1990s.
