Scope and Content

The collection consists of a Union soldier's letter, written by Corp. Wayne Thurman, Co. C, 42nd Indiana Vols., Calhoun, [Kentucky], dated December 26, 1861. The letter, written to Thurman's brother, Francis Marion Thurman, discusses camp happenings, including sickness, death, housing, and fights amongst the regiment. Thurman describes the regiment's readiness to fight, but urges his brother to remain home and take care of things there. Thurman includes a newspaper article so that his brother "can see what the 42nd is."

The newspaper article features a letter the to editor dated December 9, 1861. The author, "Wiggins," tells the editor of the regiment's desire for promotions within the ranks and of the competency of its officers and men. Wiggins asks the editor to encourage the promotions in return for the entire regiment subscribing to "the Journal" once they returned home.

Also included in the collection is the letter's envelope addressed to Marion Thurman.

Biographical Note

Wayne Thurman was born in 1839 in Spencer County, Indiana to William R. Thurman and Anna Shrode Thurman. Wayne enlisted as a corporal in Company C, 42nd Indiana Regiment in October of 1861. Currently there are no records of correspondence with Wayne following 1863. The date of his death is unknown.
