Scope and Content

The collection consists of an unbound diary, marching orders, and an itemized list of purchases. The diary entries are dated from May 5 through May 31, 1864. During this time, Curtis and the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry were sent to assist with the campaign at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. Curtis' diary begins as he records the regiment's movements around the state of Virginia before they arrived to aid in the campaign. The marching orders and list of purchases both date to May 4, 1864.

Biographical Note

Daniel S. Curtis enlisted as a First Lieutenant in the Union Army on September 2, 1862. Originally part of the Twenty Eight Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers, Curtis became part of the 1st D.C. Cavalry (Baker's Cavalry) in May 21, 1863 where he worked as a recruiter. In the spring of 1864, Baker's Cavalry was sent to Virginia. In August of 1864, Curtis mustered into the field staff of the 1st Maine Cavalry. On July 5, 1866, Curtis was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Curtis died in 1890.
