Scope and Content

This collection contains records created and collected by the Virginia Association for Biological Farming (VABF) between the early 1990s and the mid-2010s. Materials include adminstrative records for association operations; documents from annual conferences; educational resources produced by the VABF; files relating to grants applied for; subject files containing research, committee service, Virginia farming at large; and slides and photographs from public exhibits and events.

Abstract

This collection contains records created and collected by the Virginia Association for Biological Farming (VABF) between the early 1990s and the mid-2010s.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into six series.

Series I: Administrative Documents has six subseries. Subseries A: Board of Directors contains minutes from meetings, calendars, reports, and Board of Director files. Subseries B: Annual Meetings contains minutes from general meeting, executive committee meetings, and strategic planning meetings. Subseries C: Administrative History contains by-laws, administrative correspondence, foundation and treasurer reports, organizational profiles, website materials, and limited financial documents. (The bulk of any donated financial documents were returned to the donor for legal purposes.) Subseries D: Membership contains rosters, local chapter information, and directories. Subseries E: Publications and Outreach contains administrative documents for the publication of the newsletter (copies of the newsletter are cataloged for the Rare Book Collection), the publications commitee, and newspaper clippings. Subseries F: Information Sheets contains handouts and flyers produced by VABF for educational uses and distribution.

Series II: Conference Materials has two subseries. Subseries A: Virginia Association for Biological Farming Conferences includes documentation, planning, and organizational materials around VABF hosted conferences. Subseries B: Other Conferences includes materials for other state conferences or events in which VABF members or the organization may have had participation, primarily state fairs.

Series III: Educational Materials has two subseries. Subseries A: Education includes infomration on workshops and training. Subseries B: Programs and Projects includes files and infomration on certification opportunities, research events, and collaborations with Virginia Tech and other institutions.

Series IV: Grants has folders with information on grants submitted, applied for, and/or participated in mby VABF.

Series V: Subject Files includes folders organized by topic. These range from collected information on aspects of farming in Virginia, related committees and programmatic efforts, and research.

Series VI: Slides, Photos, Exhibits contains the VABF slides, information sheets with images, photographs from photograph contests, and images used in display boards at public events.

Acquisition Information

The Virginia Association for Biological Farming Records were donated to Special Collections and University Archives in September 2015. Additional materials were donated in March 2016, September 2017 and 2019. More accruals are expected in the future.

Separated Materials

The collection included issues of the organization's newsletter, The Virginia Biological Farmer, which have been cataloged for the Special Collection and University Archives' Rare Book Collection.
