Scope and Content
The Albert N. Hubbard Letter is a diary-style letter that contains information pertaining to fighting and traveling through the Shenandoah Valley, including New Market, Woodstock, Harrisonburg, and Staunton. The letter was written in Martinsburg, Virgnia, between April 27-June 7, 1864 and then sent back to Hubbard's home. Hubbard would occasionally send portions of his diary home.

Biographical Note
Albert Newell Hubbard was born on November 7, 1833 in Windsor, Massachusetts. He married Venila Anne Crittenden on October 3, 1854 at Hawley, MA. They had four children. Hubbard enlisted into "B" Co. of the 34th Massachusetts Infantry on July 19, 1862. He was a part of the color guard on the day of the New Market Battle. All of the other color guard men were shot except for Hubbard. Hubbard was wounded in October of 1864 at Cedar Creek, VA. He mustered out 6/16/1865 at Richmond, Virginia. Following the war, Hubbard worked as a farmer. Hubbard died on July 24, 1905 from diseases of liver and kidneys.
