Administrative History

Authorized by the United States Congress in 1970, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (IKE) is a comissioned nuclear-powered and second Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. It was named after the 34th U.S. president, Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower. The ship was christened by Mamie Doud-Eisenhower, his widow, and set sail for its first voyage under the command of Captain William E. Ramsey in 1978. The ship completed numerous Mediterranean sea deployments from the years 1978 to 2013. It celebrated the late Eisenhower's 100th birthday in 1990. By 1994, IKE had become one of the first ships that adapted the new concept, "adaptive force packaging." The early 2000s has seen the ship stationed for training in Norfolk and Newport News shipyards off the coast of Virginia. In 2013, IKE docked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for incremental availability.
