Scope and Content

This collection includes a 43-page typescript, entitled "The Pursuit of Land Grant Status of the University of Virginia (UVA)," by Scott George Stadtmueller, a graduate student at the University of Virginia. The paper is about UVA's attempt to apply for Land Grant status. It was dedicated to Colonel Harry Temple (1911-2004), who attended and worked at Virginia Tech, due Stadtmueller using his documents to make his case. The document tries to make a case for UVA's bid for Land Grant status despite being founded before the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862 and the reason it failed. The 1850s-1860s saw an increase of practical coursework being offered at the university and it being a school for agriculture like Virginia Tech. Stadtmueller concludes that UVA lost this debate due to not following the rules of the Morrill Act.
