Biographical Note

James W. Leslie served in the 45th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Company D, of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He enslisted on May 29, 1861, in Wytheville, Virginia, and was mustered on the same day. He was imprisoned on October 15, 1862, then was paroled.

In a 1907 disability pension application, James W. Davis, 71, stated he was born in Montgomery County and moved to Wythe County in 1858. During the war, he was made "Orderly Sargent [sic] of Co. D. and later promoted to Sargent [sic] Major of the 45th Regiment. He also worked as a laborer since the war, not being able to work for two years due to old age.

In the 1870 U.S. census, James W. Leslie, 35, and Margaret Leslie, 30, are listed as living in Blacklick, Wythe County, Virginia. James is identified as a "day laborer" born in Virginia, while Margaret is "keeping house" and born in Virginia. They have 3 children: Origan(?), 5, Valentine, 3, and James 3. In the 1880 census, James W. Leslie, 43 (or 45?), is listed as a school teacher, still in Blacklick, and the family includes Margaret A. Leslie, 34 [sic], Oregon M., 17, Charles L., 14, Marion D., 11, William H., 8, and Minnie K., 2.
