Scope and Content

This collection contains a diary written by Frederick Wrede, who served in the Union Army at the beginning of the American Civil War. The first eighteen pages of the diary were written while Wrede was still a soldier. The rest of the diary documents Wrede’s transition back to civilian life. The first entry in the diary was on July 1, 1862, and the final entry was on January 12, 1863.

Biographical Note

Born around 1840, Frederick Wrede, from Angelica, Allegany County, New York, served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Wrede enlisted in September or October 1861 to serve in the 85th New York Regimental Band, 2nd Brigade, Beck's Division. On August 11, 1862, Wrede was discharged from the army by an Act of Congress while at Harrison's Landing, Virginia. He later re-enlisted on August 21, 1863 to serve as a bugler in Company B, 12th New York Cavalry.
