Administrative History
Engineer Aviation Battalions (EABs) were first created in 1939, joining the U. S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) upon its creation in 1941. During World War II, there were 157 EABs, segregated into 109 units of white troops and 48 units of Black troops. The EABs were responsible with constructing (and sometimes defending) airfields, runways, and roads. The USAAF disbanded in 1947 upon the creation of the U. S. Air Force.
The 824th Engineers Aviation Battalion was stationed in Iceland in 1943 and 1944 during the war.
