Scope and Content

The G. C. Bales Tourist Camp Collection contains tourist ledgers and ephemera related to the Southwest Virginia Co-op. The ledgers contain tourist's names, address, cabin number, and vehicle information. The collection also includes a small group of ephemera containing stations, post cards, a P. O. Box key from G. C. Bales, receipts, and a newsletter.

Biographical / Historical

Groseclose, Virginia is named for Henry Casper Groseclose (1892-1955), also known as the Father of the Future Farmers of America. Groselose taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) where he helped found the Future Farmers of Virginia, which ended up being the framework for the Future Farmers of America. Groseclose served as the FFA's exectutive secretary from 1928-1930 and the treasurer from 1930-1941.
