Scope and Content

This collection contains six handwritten letters from Samuel D. Reck to his wife, Hannah. The letters were written between December 1862 and May 1863. The letters primarily discuss Reck's role in the defense of Suffolk, but also talk about his general health, and life in the army. This collection also includes two envelopes that were used to mail the letters. Transcripts of the letters are also included in the collection.

Biographical Note

Samuel David Reck was born to Samuel and Sarah Clutz Reck on July 24, 1833, in Mount Joy Township, Pennsylvania. Reck married Catharine Hannah Allison (1837-1916) on December 20, 1855, and they had four children: John W., Charles H., Anna or Annie M., and Rosa B. During the American Civil War, Reck served as a private in the 165th Pennsylvania Drafted Militia Infantry of the Union Army. Following the war, Reck returned home to his family and worked as a farmer. Reck died on January 6, 1922.
