Scope and Content

This collection contains a letter authored by Henry M. Lazelle in 1911. Lazelle wrote this letter in response to an earlier letter from a Mr. Norris. Lazelle uses the letter to tell Mr. Norris about several things that he learned while he oversaw the publication of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies in the War of the Rebellion. Also included in this collection is a typed transcript of the letter.

Biographical Note

Henry Martyn Lazelle was born on September 8th, 1832 in Enfield, Massachusetts. Lazelle was an officer in the United States and Union Armies from 1855 to 1894. Lazelle was taken as a prisoner of war in 1861, but was released in July 1862. After his release, Lazelle was stationed in Washington, D. C., where he was the Assistant Commisary General of Prisoners of War. Lazelle held this post until October 1863. From then until October 1864, Lazelle served as the Colonel of the 16th New York Volunteer Calvary. Lazelle spent the rest of the war as the Inspector General on the staff of General Frederick Steele. Lazelle held several posts following the war. One of the more notable post that Lazelle held was the Commandant of Cadets at the United States Military Academy. Lazelle also oversaw the publication of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies in the War of the Rebellion. Lazelle passed away on July 21st, 1917, at the age of 84.
