Biographical Note
Alfred T. Harris (1799-1883) married Marcy C. Brander (1815-1893) in Chesterfield County, Virginia, on May 14, 1835, and they had four children: Powhatan, Alfred T., Jr., Ella, and Julia. He was a merchant in Richmond, running a tobacco exchange called Alfred T. Harris & Son, with his son Alfred T., Jr., according to the 1869 Richmond directory.
According to the 1840 census, there is an Alfred T. Harris, who enslaved 7 people, including men, women, and children. On the 1850 census, one Alfred T. Harris enslaved a Black man who was either 18 or 48, while another enslaved 6 men, women, and children.
